The Therapeutic Recreation Program at St. John of
God Community Services offers recreation and leisure
opportunities for students and adults across the
agency. These include recreation and leisure
community-based instruction for school-age students,
after-school leisure options such as sports training
and cultural arts classes, and adult evening leisure
activities that include social outings and theater
performances. In addition, we offer a Junior
Sports Training and Competitive Level Special
Olympics Program.
The Therapeutic Recreation Program
incorporates the ideas of active living,
intellectual and emotional stimulation,
integration and inclusion through the
development of an independent leisure
lifestyle. We continue to look for ways to
bridge the gap between our students/adults
and their non-disable peers, which also serves
to educate and involve the community in the
lives of the individuals we serve. We strongly
support inclusion and integrated activities by
designing over 80% of our programs to take
place in community environments.
