Spring has a way of stirring something hopeful in all of us—a fresh start, a renewed sense of purpose, and the reminder that small acts of love can grow into something life-changing. At St. John of God Community Services, spring also invites us to look back with gratitude and step forward with intention.
This season, we’re returning Back to Our Roots—to the simple, faithful actions that first shaped our mission and still guide us today.
A Basket That Became a Symbol of Compassion
When we reflect on our rich roots, we can’t help but think of St. John of God’s bread basket—a humble item that tells a powerful story.

St. John of God carried his basket everywhere he went. He walked the streets collecting donations of bread, charcoal, clothing, and whatever else people could spare. These gifts helped him care for those who needed it most. Yet what makes his story so remarkable is this: he often returned to his hospital with an empty basket and a full heart.
Why? Because along the way, he met neighbors in urgent need—and he couldn’t pass them by. He gave what he had, right then and there, meeting people exactly where they were.
That simple basket became a lasting sign of compassionate hospitality. A love that does more than notice suffering; it responds with dignity, kindness, and action. Tradition even holds that when St. John of God fell ill, he rested his head on that very basket.
The Basket We Carry Today
We think about that story often as we consider how we serve our community right here in South Jersey.

Because with supporters like you, we are walking in our founder’s footsteps as we bring care to the places where our neighbors live, learn, and work. We may
not carry a woven basket through the streets of Granada, but we do carry a “basket” of our own: compassion made visible through practical support.
This spring, our basket is our Mobile Food Pantry and our on-site food pantry—serving families across South Jersey with dignity and kindness.
And the need is growing.

More individuals and families are reaching out for help than ever before—especially for fresh, healthy food that nourishes both body and spirit. Food insecurity doesn’t just mean an empty stomach; it can mean stress, instability, and impossible choices between groceries, rent, and utilities. When food becomes uncertain, everything else feels uncertain too.
That’s why your support matters!
A Spring Invitation: Help Fill the Basket
This season of renewal is also a season of response—an invitation to be part of something tangible and life-giving.
When you give to St. John of God Community Services, you are doing more than supporting a program. You are helping to fill a basket that goes directly into communities where it is needed most.
Your gift today will help us:
- Expand our on-site food pantry to meet growing demand
- Increase mobile food pantry events in neighborhoods across South Jersey
- Provide more fresh fruits and vegetables alongside pantry staples
- Support hundreds of families with hospitality they can feel
Every donation helps us show up consistently and compassionately—offering help that feels personal, respectful, and rooted in dignity.

What It Means to “Do Good” This Spring
One of the most meaningful lessons from St. John of God’s bread basket is that compassion isn’t complicated. It’s faithful. It’s consistent. It’s willing to walk toward need rather than away from it.
This spring, we invite you to stand with us once again.
With your help we can:
- Fill the basket
- Fill the tables
- And ensure hope is within reach for every family we serve
Join Us: Fill the Basket, Fill a Table
If you’ve ever wondered whether your gift makes a difference, we want you to know this: it does. It becomes nourishment. It becomes relief. It becomes a moment where a family feels seen, supported, and cared for.
As we move through this season of renewal, we invite you to be part of our spring mission as we go Back to Our Roots to help carry the basket forward.
Thank you for your steadfast generosity. With your continued support, hope will be within
reach for every family we serve.
